Community of Volunteers: Reducing Isolation, Increasing Connection, and Bolstering Capacity for Independent Living
By Kara Udell, MA, Executive Director, Oak Bay Volunteer Services
In an era where community connections are more crucial than ever, Oak Bay Volunteer Services (OBVS) stands out as a beacon of support for residents of all ages. The organization’s mission is clear: to assist individuals in maintaining their independence, enhancing their quality of life, and reducing social isolation.
OBVS’s journey began with a community needs assessment conducted in Oak Bay in 1974, revealing significant social support services gaps. In response to these findings, volunteer-led initiatives commenced three years later, ultimately leading to the incorporation of OBVS in June 1981 under the Society Act. This marked the beginning of a dedicated effort to address the needs of our residents.
While transportation underscores OBVS’s foundation, the organization’s impact extends far beyond drives. Through the years, OBVS has solidified its role as a vital resource in the community, not just by meeting immediate needs but by fostering deeper connections among residents. The organization emphasizes the importance of companionship and the human touch, recognizing that social isolation can be as detrimental to health as physical ailments.
The strength of OBVS lies in the myriad personal stories that arise from the connections made. Volunteers often share profound experiences while interacting with residents, whether through casual conversation during a home visit or helping during a trip to a local art exhibition. These heartfelt exchanges enrich the lives of those receiving support and fulfill the volunteers’ desires to contribute and connect with their community meaningfully.
Moreover, the organization’s programs and services, such as destination walks and silent disco social events, have been designed to promote inclusivity. By encouraging physical activity and getting out and about, OBVS helps residents maintain mobility while fostering friendships among peers. The joy brought to individuals, whether through a shared walk or an engaging cultural experience, enhances the community spirit that is so vital in Oak Bay.
The spirit of community support is exemplified in our longstanding partnership with the Victoria Foundation. Their invaluable contributions—from resource sharing and facilitating donations to backing projects through their Community Grant programs—have been vital to our mission. For over twenty years, the Oak Bay Volunteer Services Fund, hosted by the Victoria Foundation, has provided us with essential unrestricted funds, enabling us to uphold our commitment to fostering connections and reducing isolation among all our neighbors in Oak Bay. As we move forward, we remain grateful for the unwavering support of the Victoria Foundation and the entire community, as together, we create a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone.
