Kamps for Kids
Summer camp changes lives.
Summer camp was once a right-of-passage for kids – for many, it was their first time sleeping away from home, their first time they met kids from different neighbourhoods, and the first time they got to explore nature.
With more and more families moving to urban centres than ever before, kids today don’t have the chance to experience the great outdoors.
Kids, especially those in urban environments or that struggle with financial barriers, don’t have the same opportunities to spend time in nature.
“Studies have found that almost 70% of kids who attend summer camp see a positive change in their emotional intelligence.” (University of Waterloo, 2011).
“Kamps for Kids was a wonderful experience for Zafiya. She had a lot of great things to tell us about, such great memories, an experience for kids to take with them through life…” – L
The Williston family have been working on a donor advised fund, founded to sponsor kids to attend summer camp that otherwise could not afford to go.
This fund got started less than two years ago at the Victoria Foundation. Last year, Kamps for Kids was able to send four kids to summer camp and this year probably five.
“Thank you so much for giving my son the opportunity to go to camp. He had an amazing time. I am forever grateful for your generosity. This program is an amazing gift for our community’s children.” – G
Here’s how Kamps for Kids works: The Willistons, as a family, have donated a sum of cash, currently between $50 and $100 thousand. That cash is held by the Victoria Foundation “in trust” and invested. The annual return on investment is the money available to pay for each child’s camp fee. That way the principal continues to grow and there will be money every year to send kids to camp and have them benefit from that great experience without the fund getting depleted.
If you agree that this is a worthwhile idea, please help the Willistons grow their fund.
