Broadmead Care: Celebrating 20 Years of Impactful Partnership with the Victoria Foundation
By Mandy Parker, Vice President Philanthropy & Communications, Broadmead Care Home, a Hosted Organization with the Victoria Foundation
Meet Albert Middleton. He’s a Second World War veteran who lives at Veterans Memorial Lodge, a Broadmead Care Home in the heart of Saanich.
And he’s 109 years young.
Imagine that! At 109, Albert would be the first to tell you he has a great life. He’s not as mobile as he used to be, but he still enjoys listening to and singing the Big Band music that reminds him of younger days.
It is Broadmead Care’s great privilege to care for Albert. And it is because of a profound two-decade long partnership with the Victoria Foundation that Albert, and more than 400 others like him, are able to experience purpose and joy in their daily lives. It is thanks to this partnership that the people who live and work in Broadmead Homes have the opportunity to live as well and as fully as they can. We are so grateful!
Living Our Purpose: Wellbeing and Happiness for All
Broadmead Care’s relationship with the Victoria Foundation began in 2004 with the founding of the Beckley Farm Lodge Fund, and over the years, it has been a cornerstone in advancing our Purpose: To build communities where every person can experience wellbeing and happiness.
We truly believe in our Purpose, and it drives everything we do. This belief is woven into the fabric of our services and programs in our Homes, where we care for more than 400 people. Whether through personalized care plans, community engagement initiatives, or innovative programs, our goal is to create an environment where people feel valued, supported, and empowered.
Our Adult Day Programs (ADP) echo this approach. Nearly 1,000 people per year use the ADP, which is offered at three Broadmead Care Homes. These programs enrich the lives of participants through meaningful activities, social engagement, and therapeutic support. Most of all, they are an opportunity for people who live in the community to socialize in a safe and welcoming place. And it helps their at-home caregivers too, by providing a few hours of time to themselves.
Expanding Horizons: The New Nigel House
Broadmead Care is excited to expand our Homes and services in the coming year. We are particularly excited about the new Nigel House being built just off Vernon Avenue. This state-of-the-art Home is set to become a pivotal part of our community. It is specifically designed to meet the needs of young adults with disabilities, giving them the opportunity to do things many of us take for granted – like going to the gym to work out.
Nigel House will provide a supportive and inclusive environment for the people who live there. The new Home will increase the number of beds for long term care, nearly doubling them! This means greater support for younger adults with specific medical conditions and needs.
And that’s not all! Through Nigel Living at Nigel House, Broadmead Care now offers affordable housing and independent living options. This will help address a critical need for accessible and affordable living arrangements for people who are independent.
By offering diverse living options and tailored support, Nigel House will enhance the quality of life for many individuals and families, ensuring that everyone has access to the care and resources they need.
A Partnership for the Future
Looking ahead, we are excited about the opportunities that the future holds. With the continued support of the Victoria Foundation, the expansion of Nigel House, and the ongoing commitment to our Purpose, people like Albert will continue to experience purpose and joy in their daily lives. Together, we are building a future where everyone has the opportunity to experience wellbeing and happiness, and where every person is valued and supported.
