Theatre takes centre stage with life-honouring award
Applications for the Megan Newton Memorial Award in Theatre opened on June 1, keeping alive the memory of a vibrant young woman by providing opportunities for youth with a passion for theatre.
Megan Newton was an artist, set designer, stage manager and founding member of Theatre BOMBUS. She held a BFA in Theatre from the University of Victoria and was the Operations Manager at Intrepid Theatre starting in 2007, where she helped establish and curate the YOU SHOW.
In 2012, Megan’s life was cut short by melanoma, shortly after her 30th birthday.
A firm believer is assisting local emerging artists, the Megan Newton Memorial Award in Theatre honours Megan’s memory to burgeoning theatrical talent, offering annually $800 to a student attending a post-secondary program in theatre.
The student will have an interest in ?experimental or non-traditional forms of theatrical performance, or innovative use of theatre as a way to explore unusual or controversial topics?. Preference will be given to qualified applicants who are focusing their education and/or future plans on stage management, theatre administration, and/or any aspect of theatre-related design.
The fund is held at the Victoria Foundation.??
